And now, here’s where it all ends. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the last of the 7-book series from arguably the most popular and well-loved writer of our time, Joanne Kathleen “J.K.?? Rowling. The highly anticipated release of the book has sent the whole planet into frenzy last July 21, when HP7 finally and officially hit the bookstands. In fact, several weeks ago, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter Book 5) the movie also shattered box-office records, toppling Spiderman 2 from the top record holder of All-time best openings. It’s still currently playing and has stayed on #2 of the heap two weeks after its release, and so far has raked in $139.7 million.
Going back to Book 7, there have been much ado on this final book as Rowling has left its millions of fans with the greatest puzzle: will Harry Potter survive the much dreaded duel against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? The secret ending to this phenomenal saga has catapulted the book into the best seller’s list months prior to its official release. Meanwhile, some muggles who wanted to ride on with the hype, have searched high and low to get a glimpse of the book and maybe, to the secret ending itself, and get that distinction as the “HP Plot Spoiler??. Unsurprisingly, some have succeeded.
Various claims of leakage of the book has pervaded the worldwide web, from fanfic stories posing as the book as written by JKR, to one spilling the beans as part of his religious mission (alluding certain message by the Pope Benedict himself), to photographed copies, and a spoiler book review by the New York Times, days before the official release date. One claimed he hacked one of the publisher’s computers (Bloomsbury) and that he got to read the last chapter, and went on sending out his mass email containing the supposed climax of the book. In Ebay, there was a seller of the book at least 2 weeks before the book will be released, who claimed he already has a copy, and he will sent it the next day to anyone willing to buy it at $240+, from the original price of $39.00.
In yet another website, an HP fan who got an early delivery from an online store, painstakingly took pictures of every page the book (visible enough to be read), and then posting it all over the net. All of these certainly irked HP fans who, despite the availability of said resources, refused to see even just the chapter titles, because they want to experience the book at the time that JKRowling wanted them to, that is, at exactly 12:01 of July 21 (British Time).
A day before the release, the Rowling camp have expressed disbelief on these spoilers and leakages coming out, and have sent various subpoenas to persons responsible for the leaks, and the violation of the embargo order. Rowling herself appealed to the person who posted the book photos to take them out, while she expressed her disappointment on the NY Times review of her book for disrespecting her and her reader’s wishes to keep the secret sealed until the book’s release.
Anyway so much for that… I now bring you the much-awaited Harry Potter Book 7: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Btw, I was told by my source that this copy has not yet been fully copyread, so I hope you be more forgiving for any misspelled or missing words, though they are very very minimal… I could have waited for the official e-book, but I chose to share it right here, right now, because I know that most of you just cant wait anymore. We’re also seizing the occasion to wish out loud that her editors had done their jobs more actively. It’s hard to escape the notion that the first three volumes were more carefully edited than the last four. Hallows doesn’t contain the extraneous scenes found in, say, Goblet of Fire, but the momentum is uneven. Rowling is much better at comedy than at fight scenes, and no reader of the sixth book will be startled to hear that Hallows has little humor or that its characters engage in more than a few fights. Surely her editors could have helped her find other methods of building suspense besides the use of ellipses and dashes? And craft fight dialogue that sounds a bit less like it belongs in a comic book? Okay, we’re quibbling. We know these minor nuisances won’t dent readers’ enjoyment, at least not this generation of readers; we couldn’t put Hallows down ourselves. But we believe Rowling, and future readers, deserved even better. Ages 9-12. (July)
