To jumpstart our e-book feature section, I am choosing this fiction novel which has an upcoming movie version (to be shown in US in December 15th)? ERAGON: Book 1 of the Inheritance Trilogy, by Christopher Paolini (see our E-Books Library for his other books). I have heard (and read) a lot of good reviews about this novel more than a year ago but unfortunately, didn’t have the time to read it myself, just yet. I had a renewed interest in it when the 2nd installment came out in late 2005, and just a few months back, when I first saw the movie trailer of the film adaptation. Now, I must definitely read that book, I said to myself. Well, what do you know, more than a month has passed, I still haven’t read it. Maybe one of these days… or maybe if I see the movie version and it is good, it might actually compel me to read and experience the story all over again, savor it word by word… now if the movie sucks, then, Eragon’s chance to land in my booklist, might then be close to nil (though I have browsed the e-book a few times so I have a pretty good idea what its about).
Anyway, just a sneek peak of the story…
The main character is Eragon, a young boy from Caryahall who finds a mysterious blue stone in the mountains, The Spine. From the stone, Eragon watched a baby dragon hatch which he named Saphira and raised in secret. When the two Ra?zacs hunted for the mysterious blue stone, Eragon and Saphira had to flee into the forest, leaving behind his uncle who then died from a fire. Eragon then decided to become Dragon Rider ? and learned about magic and swordfighting, under Brom?s tutelage. And so, there begin?s Eragon?s journey? In one occasion where Eragon, Brom and Saphira were ambushed by the Ra?zac, they were rescued by a stranger named Murtagh. Not long after, Brom dies due to the injuries he suffered and in his final breath, revealed a long-kept secret.
The story then follows the journey of the remaining trio (Eragon, Murtagh and Saphira) to search for the hidden Varden, a rebel faction Brom was telling them about. It was during this time that Eragon started dreaming about an elf suffering in pain. Later in the story, Eragon was captured and was sent to the same prison where the elf was being detained. Murtagh and Saphira stages a prisonbreak only to meet a face-off with the most powerful creature in Alagaesia- the Shade. Eragon?s journey as a new Dragon Rider includes risking his life to enter the Varden?s fortress where he found out about the agreement between the dwarves, elves and the Varden regarding Saphira?s egg and how it was strategically left at The Spine. Okay, I’ll stop right here…
